Launch of Banogue Remembers – A Portrait of a Parish in County Limerick

A 240 page book local history of the parish of Banogue and recollections of its community at home and abroad was launched last Sunday evening in the local Parish Centre by the Banogue Heritage Association. The project is the result of seven months of gathering of articles, verse, art and images from over 60 contributors, some of whom like the poet Tom Hickey have passed to their eternal reward. There are extensive features about the local gaelic games tradition, the various phases of Banogue national school since the 1850s and the parish as a separate church unit since 1861 as well as entertaining accounts of local characters and personalities. The book contains complete lists of the Tithe payers of the parish in the 1830s and all resident families in 1852 recorded in Griffith’s Valuation. The history of any place is an ongoing business and this project is only a part of that process. The book gives an insight to the social and historical background of a local community and is available from Kathleen (Tel:061/397322) or Maureen (Tel:087/6560275.
